Okay, one of scariest stories that I ever read was in a book of short stories by Katinka Loeser, called "A Thousand Pardons". I believe the story is titled "Who's Little Girl are You?". It was one of the most understated pieces I have ever encountered about a little girl who goes in for a checkup at the hospital with her mom, and everybody is light-hearted and kidding around, and everybody kind of decides that it would be fun for her to have a slumber party there that night. From the minimal conversation between the nurses and the little girl and mom, the reader comes to the realization that she has been sick for a long, long time, and this is going to be her last stop. The impact of this information is a terrifying punch of helplessness to the solar plexus. This woman's writing is gorgeous. I have never stopped thinking about that story.
