Is there a "reading room" (not Christian Science) in Orange County, CA?

I love to read. Occasionally, I would like to get away from the house and go somewhere specifically to read. I know that people like to hang out at Barnes and Noble, and one can read in a library, but that's not really what I'm looking for.

What I'm thinking of would be like a library, but really more like an old-time "gentleman's club," sort of dark with big leather chairs and reading lamps. A place where I could bring my own book(s), sit down, put my feet up on an ottoman and read without distraction for a few hours.

Does such a place exist, specifically for reading, in Orange County, CA?

Haven't heard of one in OC.

Check out local junior and 4 year colleges; their libraries typically have comfortable furniture in reading rooms.

Breaking dawn release! help!?

So my brilliant father decided to ruin everything and plan a trip to reno, nevada on the most important date of the year(maybe 2nd if you count twilight the movie premireing). When I heard we were leaving on august 1st(flying) this surge of urgancy ran through me and I did what I'm sure many of you fans would've done; panic. So now I turned to you all for help. Does ANYONE know if there is a barnes and nobles in reno nevada that is having the midnight release of breaking dawn. I'm begging you to please help out a fellow twilight fanatic. Please. And could you also tell me if I need to pre order Breaking Dawn to THAT book store in order for me to get it at the midnight release. Thank you soooo much.
Breaking dawn release! help!?

Breaking dawn release! help!?
Amazon.com

or

Go to Barnes and Nobles website and do a store locator of the area you're going to be in.

It's not the end of the world, seriously.
Reply:Well you should pre-order it off of a store near you!
Reply:omg, im not answering ur question, cuz i have no idea, but im in the same stich (only not Nevada and im leaving July 30th) but still. us poor outcasts... :'(

wish you the best of luck!

can't wait till bd (with or without release party.... thou i perfer with)
Reply:I just went on Barnes and Noble's website to see if they have a store in Reno that's having a Breaking Dawn Release Party, and there is! Click on the link for the details. :-) I don't think you'll need to pre-order anything; most of the time (and I know this because my mom and her boyfriend work at Barnes and Noble, and my dad used to work at a bookstore) they have like a million copies left over of the book after the release party, just because they know they're going to be selling so much, and they have boxes of the book that aren't even opened yet even like a month or two after it has come out. :-) So I would just go there if I were you, I'm sure there'll be like a million copies for you to buy. Good luck and have fun! Rock on and good job reading books! :-)
Reply:Breaking Dawn is being released on August 2,2008.

There is a Barnes %26amp; Noble Booksellers in Reno that is having the breaking dawn release party. I have included the address and the link to the site in reno. Hope this helps you out. I know i am excited for the book and the release party too. I would recommend pre ordering the book for the release party at the location in reno. All of the details of the release of breaking dawn and other projects are on stephanies website. Good Luck.

Looking for the title and author of a science fiction book that introduced the "starseed" concept.?

Society has fallen into decay and neighborhoods have been walled in for security. Services like police and fire must be paid for by the neighborhood. The protagonist is a female whose father goes missing one day on his way home from work. The neighborhood is torched by thugs and the girl strikes out with, I believe, a younger sibling. They are headed to the country, to a sort of commune.

Along the way, the protagonist picks up a group of followers. She comes up with the "starseed" idea: that it is their destiny to leave the Earth and populate the stars. That's about where the book ends.

What's it called, who wrote it, and are there sequels? The book was published before 1998.

Book recommendation for a young adult?

My nephew will be graduating from high school and proude of himself (with arrogance) to be an adult. I am looking to give him a book as a gift (among other gifts) to help him grow humble and be respectful to others. Any recommendations?
Book recommendation for a young adult?
Its going to take more than a book. I hope he's going to college and living in the dorms. That oughta do it!

I can't think of any books with the message "You're really not that great." I should write that book!

If you like murder mystery with a little romance try Johnathan Kellerman or Dean Koontz.
Reply:MEG CABOT!!!! You will NOT be let down!
Reply:You may enjoy either Julie Garwood or Linda Howard. Both write really good novels.

If you haven't read them, I'd highly recommend the books by Richard Paul Evans like Finding Noel and others.

Another author whose works I enjoy is Catherine Coulter. She has been writing an excellent FBI mystery series lately, but she has also written some wonderful historical romances.

Some other good romance writers include Mary Jo Putney, Patricia Veryan, Loretta Chase, Jo Beverley, Johanna Lindsey, Christina Skye (her Draycott Abbey romantic suspense books are really good), Carola Dunn, Dorothy Garlock, Jayne Ann Krentz (who writes historical romances as Amanda Quick), Georgette Heyer, Mary Balogh, Carla Kelly, Lynn Kerstan, Emma Lange and others.

If you enjoy classics, I'd recommend all of Jane Austen's novels (especially Pride and Prejudice and Persuasion), Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte, Wives and Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell, Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell, Vanity Fair by William Makepeace Thackeray or one of the books by Fanny Burney (like Camilla).

I hope this helps.

Agatha Christie fans...I need your help!!!?

I've read all of her books and I seem to recall a novel or story that had something to do with lemon verbena. Something about a mother and son...but I don't know which book/story and I can't remember any other details about it. This has been nagging at me for some time...please help!!!
Agatha Christie fans...I need your help!!!?
I'm definitely an Agatha Christie fan, but lemon verbena doesn't ring a bell. I wasn't going to answer this until I noticed that nobody had answered.

It wasn't a mother and son, but Endless Night had a conservatory in it and a lot of plants. Could it have been that one?

Would you recognize the title of the book if you saw it? If so you could check her titles at http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/c/agat... Fantastic Fiction.

You could also go to the official Agatha Christie web site and ask a question about it. You may get an answer. This http://us.agathachristie.com/site/have_y... seems to be their message board section.

If all else fails, check http://www.whatsthatbook.com/ - you can ask a question about a book whose name you can't remember and, sooner or later, someone will answer you.

I really hope this helps. I know how frustrating it can be to forget the name of a book. I'd love to know if you find out the right title!

Anyone know of any awesome books!?!?

because uhm, i haven't read one in forever. im so bored so let me know if you've read any good books lately, i know its summer but im so bored, its not even funny.

Anyone know of any awesome books!?!?
Here are some of my favorite teen and some adult-ish novels:

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. It's about a girl named Bella who moves to Forks, Washington and runs into a group of vampires. VERY VERY good! I REALLY think you should give it a chance because I'm not into vampire stuff, but it was AMAZING!

http://stepheniemeyer.com/twilight.html

Pants On Fire by Meg Cabot. It's about a girl who basically has everything (popular best friend, good grades... and TWO boyfriends.) It's really funny because then her friend from eighth grade come back to town (everyone hates him) and she falls head over heals for him too.

http://www.megcabot.com/

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares. It's about four girls who where born as friends. They go through ups and downs together.

The Last Summer (Of You and Me) by Ann Brashares was amazing. It may be more of an adult book, but it was fairly good.

All-American Girl and All-American Girl Ready Or Not by Meg Cabot. It's about an outcast girl who happens to save the presidents life. Suddenly everyone at school wants to be her friend, but she doesn't really care... What she does care about is the presidents son...

Queen of Babble by Meg Cabot. It's about a girl who goes over seas with her boyfriend after (almost!) finishing college. After a bad break up with him, she goes with her friend and runs into someone.... It's a very good adult book!

How To Be Popular by Meg Cabot. It's about a girl who comes across an old book in her grandma'a attic called how to be popular. So, she follows the rules of the book hoping to become popular.

Jinx by Meg Cabot. If you liked Twilight, then you'll like this book. It's about a girl who has bad luck all the time so she moves in with her aunt and uncle. He sister is into witchcraft and I don't want to spoil the rest, but it fairly good.

Teen Idol by Meg Cabot. This is about a girl who has an advice column in her school newspaper. So, when a famous actor comes to her school and she's the only one who knows about it, chaos occurs!

Someone Like You by Sarah Dessen is also pretty good. It's about two girls that are best friends who are having a few issues in the love department.

http://www.sarahdessen.com/?q=books

Just Listen by Sarah Dessen is one of my favorites! It's about a girl who had something terrible happen to her and she's learning how to cope with it and befriends an outcast boy.

The Mediator series by Meg Cabot. I've only read the first two, but they are VERY good. It's about a girl named Suze who moves to California from New York because her mother just remarried. Oh, and Suze can see ghosts...

13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher. It's about a guy named Clay who gets these tapes in the mail about why a girl named Hannah killed herself. It's very good and a great page-turner!

http://www.thirteenreasonswhy.com/

She Went All The Way by Meg Cabot. This is a book for more mature people, but it's very good. It's about two people who get stranded in the wilderness.

Forever... by Judy Bloom is also pretty good. It's about a girl getting a boyfriend and going through sensual things. It's a little mature.

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan is okay. My friends LOVED it! I don't wanna tell you what it's about because it'll just give it all away.

The Host by Stephenie Meyer. It's about how these things called souls invade Earth, as well as humans. It's based on a soul named Wanda who is placed into Melanie, who refuses to fade away like she's suppose too. It's very interesting and I totally recommend it!

http://stepheniemeyer.com/thehost.html

Good luck with finding a book! I hope these help!

Reply:Boy Meets Boy, it's about this boy who falls in love with a boy. :-) It's by David Levithan and it's really good, and it's not like criticising or saying that homosexuality is OK. :-)
Reply:Depending on what you like....

I like Christopher Paolini and Dean Koontz. They are incredible authors that are creative and that have an uncanny talent for writing fiction.

Paolini's third book of his Eragon series should be comming out this fall... I'm waiting so impatiently.
Reply:Well, I have 2 words for you.

HARRY POTTER=]
Reply:I'm a huge Stephen King fan. At the moment I'm reading The Talisman by Stephen King %26amp; Peter Straub. So far it's awesome. It's probably more fantasy but it is still horror.
Reply:Hmm, how old are you? I had some favorites when I was in high school--actually, they're still favorites even though I'm almost 23. :)

Young Adult:

"Name Me Nobody"

NMN, is set in Hawai'i and follows a chubby girl who loses weight and starts dating; but it deals with fidelity; abandonment (by parents); homosexuality; rape; etc.--one of my all-time favorite books.

Definitely not a sugary, feel-good teen read, but I think it's more worthwhile because it's realistic.

_________________________

"Curtis Piperfield's Biggest Fan" and the sequel, "Lucky Me."

I liked the second one more than the first, but both are good. They're about a teen girl, C.C., who starts dating and has to deal with all of the complications that come along with being a teenager. There's some great poetry in there that really inspired me as a teen.

________________________

"Adult" novels:

"The Red Tent"

Not sure if you're into Biblical-based books (I'm usually not), but this one is amazing. It's about the story of Dinah. In the Bible, she gets raped by a prince and her brothers destroy the city/kingdom. The book stretches out the story to about 300 pages. I cried when I read this book--and I NEVER cry.

____________________

"Love"

Toni Morrison. Need I say more?

"The Dew-Breaker"

I'm an English major and I found this kinda tough, but it's still completely worthwhile. Go read a wikipedia history of Haiti and you'll appreciate it even more.
Reply:I agree with pinktea that you should read The Kite Runner. I haven't read the book yet but I've already watched the movie and I loved it! The book should be good too and there are many positive reviews on it.

Hmm, if you're looking for fantastic books that'll keep you glued to it, try reading the many book blogs on the Internet. I have one too, if you'd like to visit it. That's where I write my book reviews. Here's the link: http://www.booksloveme.com/

Reply:Well, it really depends on your interests and patience. That is a major factor in finding a book that's awesome for you. If you like adventurous and fast paced try Harry Potter, but if that's getting old, try the Lightning Thief, Artemis Fowl, or The Sisters Grimm. If you like a book with an interesting plot try Maneater. These next books are very good, but only if your patient; Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, The Other Boleyn Girl, Pride and Prejudice, and Thanks to my Mother. Just plain out good books are: The Cinderella Pact, Wish Upon a Star, and Montmorency.

Who do you thinks is better Jacob Black or Edward Cullen?

Tell me the truth what character from twilight do you like better?
Who do you thinks is better Jacob Black or Edward Cullen?
I really hate how everyone keeps comparing these two characters. They are SO different, therefore it's not even fair to compare them. Edward is amazing, charming, dazzling, but is also incapable of getting upset! I mean, if my boyfriend was making out with another girl, I wouldn't comfort him and tell him it was okay. It really pissed me off that Edward wasn't angry with Bella when she made out with Jacob at the end of Eclipse. Okay, now for Jacob. Jake is caring, sweet, and LOYAL, but can be arrogant. The only reason Edward can hold Bella in his arms is because Jake saved her. I feel terrible how he loved Bella and got his heart ripped out. But Jake can be annoying and judgemental.

Anyway, sorry for the rant. I just hate how these two get compared. And I like them both the same. BUT Edward does belong with Bella.
Who do you thinks is better Jacob Black or Edward Cullen?
EDWARD EDWARD EDWARD EDWARD *droool*

Hmmm...I'll have to think about it, lol

Response:

I can respect that ^_^...besides, that means more Edward for me, and more Jacob for you. Everyone's happy!
Reply:Definitely Edward Cullen. He and Bella are way more meant-to-be than Jacob and Bella, and he has a way better personality. Vampires are just way cooler than werewolves in general, too. :-)
Reply:i like edward because i fell in love with him in twilight so i know how bella feels and i really really like jacob but just as a friend if i had to choose.
Reply:Edward and Jacob are both great Characters in the Twilight series, but I would have to say I like Edward better! Go Team Edward!!!
Reply:YAY!!!!!!! Someone agrees with me!!!!!

Yay!!! Another Team Jacob member!!!!!!!!

I am SO DEFINITELY TEAM JACOB all the way!

This is why: Jacob is such a loyal, caring, loving, great boy. He is such a good friend to Bella but all Bella did to him was use him again and again and break his heart.

Some prefer Jake because he is warm. Not like Edward.

Jacob is human, and there is SO MUCH he can give and do with Bella that Edward can't, because he will hurt her and kill her. With Edward, Bella has NO FUTURE. The only future she has with Edward is drinking blood and becoming a disgusting parasite. GROSS.

While with Jake, she can have a happy human life, She doesn't have to change or sacrifice anything just to be with Jacob. Jacob can give her so much, a family, children, and pure happiness. Jacob's love for Bella is more raw and pure. Wanna know why? Because he SURRENDERED for the girl he loves. He surrendered because he knows that Bella couldn't live without Edward and because Bella could only be happy with Edward. He surrendered to give the girl he loves to his immortal enemy. Despite everything he did for Bella, despite everthing Bella did to him, everything they've been through.....he SURRENDERED. Because he knows that his surrender is the key to Bella's happiness. He surrendered, knowing how much it would hurt him.

And he isn't perfect. He makes mistakes, has his own imperfection, making him all the more perfect for Bella.

It's so heartbreaking that Jacob always has to have the sad ending. A horrible ending in New Moon. A much more terrible one in Eclipse. When oh when will he finally find his happily ever after?

It is kinda annoying some people only hate him because of Edward's "hotness" and perfection. When I read the 3 books all I have to read about is how sweet his skin smells, how marble his chest is, how white his skin is, how cold his lips are, all physical! And, Bella also described Jake as a "very pretty face all in all" and "sort of beautiful" in the books, anyway. But Jacob isn't always described physically in the books. Bella knows him inside and out. Yes, Bella realized she's in love with him too, but she doesn't realize YET how truly and how really and how deeply she feels for him. She only realizes she's in love with him, but not how deepy, truly or really. I hope that's what she realizes in Breaking Dawn.

Don't get me wrong, Edward is sweet too, but slightly very overprotective. And it's kinda very controlling, manipulative and a bit abusive.

When Bella's with Jake, she is "free". She makes her own decisions, unlike when she's with Edward. Edward MAKES her make decisions which arent her own.

And do you like how light, weightless and easygoing Bella's personality is when she's with Jacob? Jacob can joke and she can have a laugh with him, but Edward just acts too maturely and too seriously about everything.

The main reason I'm on Jacob's team is because he is human. Period. He can make Bella happy, and he is the healthier choice for her. He isn't controlling, like Edward, and Bella has a happy human future with Jacob, family and children and love and all.....*sigh* If only Jacob and Bella could be together, if they did end up together, I'd be so happy I'd have tears of joy and I will be jealous of Bella....in a good way. I will be so happy for her. But if she chose Edward, I'd cry because of resentment and because it is the wrong choice for her. Humanity is very golden. We are all so lucky to have a life. But Bella--she chose Edward above all of this. *sigh* I think she made a wrong choice. I really hope she ends up with Jacob.

And it was mentioned that if the vampires never existed, then werewolves would never exist. If Edward Anthony Masen died in 1918 like he was supposed to, then there would be no more mystery and magic and creatures from horror movies in Bella's world. If the world was the sane place it was supposed to be, Jacob and Bella would be together. And they would've been happy. Jacob was the natural path Bella's life would have taken. They were really meant to be. That is what WOULD have been. And it's so sad. I could just cry right now.

I mean, think about it. About Bella. She has SO MUCH that she is going to give up, just for Edward?

Why does Jasper have so many scars?

In Eclipse, when Jasper tells the story about him and and the newborns, he shows Bella all the scars that he has. Why does he have so many, wouldn't it just have taken one bite to turn him into a vampire? Thanks for any and all answers :].
Why does Jasper have so many scars?
Remeber he sees the three girls when he was riding back and the small one bit him first and the other two joined in!

edit: Hahaha I didn't even know that!

sorry! xP
Why does Jasper have so many scars?
from the ghetto majik skool bus
Reply:Silly didn't you read his whole story...

It did only take one bite to turn him and no the other two did not join in.

In the south their are constant wars.

For Territory's of the thicker red meaning more people for the vampire who owns the territory to feed off of without being noticed.

So he gets involved in these "wars" and all those other bites are from fighting other vampires.
Reply:No, you forgot part of his story. He was changed into a vampire before getting those scars. Jasper tells Bella that the only thing that scars vampires is other vampire's venom. So, he got all those scars after he became a vampire and was in the wars with the newborns.
Reply:he got all the scars when he was fighting

he was already a vampire at that stage

and he was in the military before he was turned into a vampire so if scars carry from your human life then i imagine he would have a few from then

i love twilight!
Reply:All the scars are from trying to kill the new borns. When he was attacking them , they would attack and sometimes be successful. They are also from bitting. The new born's where out of control and they would bit, even though they had no idea what the where doing.

hope this helps!

Reply:I didn't hate it, but I didn't like it. It was just okay for me.

I thought it was funny that the Robert Neville in the books is a blonde-haired, blue-eyed guy. And then in the movie Robert Neville is played by Will Smith.

Thats okay though. I like Will Smith. :)

Teenage Author?

Have you guys ever heard of Jed Elkins? Apparently, he's like some 16 or 17 year old author or something and he wrote this book--my friends were telling me about it. Anyway, I heard he has a website that's just his name, like jedelkins.com or something. But I was just wondering if anyone has heard of this guy?
Teenage Author?
Okinawa. You will learn what real warfare is like. Also why the atom bombs were dropped.
Teenage Author?
Looks like a self-published douche to me.

If this kid were an "author" he would know to just post his first chapter as his excerpt, not chapter 4 or 9. And you just post it, you don't make it a downloadable file. Nobody trusts a teenager enough to download some garbage from his site.

And self-publishing doesn't make you an "author." A lazy writer, sure, I'll buy that. But any moron with some money to toss into a toilet can self-publish.
Reply:Sorry, haven't heard of him. :-) It's so cool that he got a book published and he's like a teenager though! :-)

Is the Necronomicon dangerous to read?

I need serious answers, I've read that it is dangerous and i've read that it is just a joke, I've heard that "it is often harmful to the health and sanity of its readers." Im not a satanist and im not religous, I just find it interesting and want to read it, but don't want to risk my life over a damn book.

If you have ever read it or have heard anything about it PLEASE tell me
Is the Necronomicon dangerous to read?
When you look past the superstition and the religious paranoia, you'll realize that it is just a book--no different than Dr. Seuss or Stephen King.
Is the Necronomicon dangerous to read?
Any book could be taken dangerously. It depends on the mindset you have when you read it. Books are to be taken seriously, but not to the point that they're all-consuming.
Reply:Just make sure your copy isn't bound in human flesh or written in blood. That's what gives it it's power.

Also, don't read any of the incantations out loud.

Reading any author does tie into that author's consciousness. Immersing in such an outlook is not really wise.

Would suggest as wise alternative, "Paths of Light and Darkness" and "The Path of Christ or Antichrist," Mark Prophet,

"Testimony of Light," Helen Greaves, and

"Men in White Apparel," Ann Ree Colton.
Reply:No, but it is hardly worth bothering with.

necronomicon was a book invented by horror novelist hp lovecraft as an element to cthullu supposedly by arab mad man/sorcer abdul alhazred (which is not even arab correct spelled or grammatically), it can be shocking i suppose but not to the point of going abdul on your a$$, just a good night fright! i wanna read it to!
Reply:it is only dangerous if you try the stuff it suggest you do.

for example: light yourself on fire inside a pentagram with the nine gates seal to look into the first gate of hell.

if you catch yourself on fire inside a pentagram with the nine seals you'll die.
Reply:The Necronomicon is a fictional book appearing in the stories by horror novelist H. P. Lovecraft. It was first mentioned in Lovecraft's 1924 short story "The Hound", written in 1922, though its purported author, the "Mad Arab" Abdul Alhazred, had been quoted a year earlier in Lovecraft's "The Nameless City".[1] Among other things, the work contains an account of the Old Ones, their history, and the means for summoning them.

List of describing words?

Is there a list somewhere of describing or descriptive words used when witting a book?
List of describing words?
They are called adjectives.

http://www.abcteach.com/abclists/adjecti...

http://www.esldesk.com/vocabulary/adject...

http://www.keepandshare.com/doc/view.php...
List of describing words?
If they describe a noun, they are adjectives. If they describe a verb (action), they are adverbs.

NOW - here is the thing. Use them sparingly and wisely!!! "The road to hell is paved with adverbs" Stephen King. I am sure there are a good many adjectives there too.

NEVER substitute description for content. By that I mean, do not use a ton of filler by using all kinds of words to describe simple things. Do you know why people enjoy reading rather than going to movies? Because they like being able to use their imagination. Don't shove description down their throats. Your forest is not necessarily the forest I imagine. Allow your readers that luxury. It is a sign of amateur authors to dump tons of adjectives and adverbs into paragraphs to extend them. It's like adding water to a chocolate milkshake to make it last longer. It may last longer, but it will taste like hell. (I like that one!)

Remember what Shakespeare said in Henry V ...

Think, when we talk of horses, that you see them

Printing their proud hoofs i' th' receiving earth;

For 'tis your thoughts that now must deck our kings,

Carry them here and there, jumping o'er times,

Turning th' accomplishment of many years

Into an hour-glass; for the which supply,

In other words - it isn't necessary to describe a horse - everyone knows what a horse looks like. And while we're at it, you know what a king looks like and an hourglass, too. You aren't idiots - you are readers.

Stephen King discusses this at length in his masterwork On Writing. Amateur writers over describe. They fill pages and pages with adjectives and adverbs and purple prose thinking they are doing their readers a great favor when in fact they are doing their readers an injustice by taking away that wonderful part of reading a book that is called "using your imagination".

If people wanted to know exactly what everything looked like - they would go to the movies. Your story will be MUCH duller is people have to read page after page of vivid description of a horse than it will if you just say - it's a horse and move on. Shakespeare knew that. He knew to do otherwise was insulting to his audience. Plus - he couldn't always afford horses for his plays.

As for lengthy descriptions of what people are wearing, what color hair and eyes they have, and other physical features like perfectly chiseled jaws, Mr. King's answer is "Spare Me." It's called purple prose, amateur and completely unnecessary. People who read aren't stupid. They don't have to be led by the nose. They have imaginations, too.

He states that "The road to hell is paved with adverbs" And I am certain there are more than a few adjectives along the way.

Use your vivid descriptions to put emotion and character into your story, but focus more on your plot and characterizations. We don't need to know every single detail in nauseating detail. It is just amateur, bad writing.

Have you read On Writing? You really should. Pax-C
Reply:Listen to Persiphone. Get yourself a thesaurus, too. That lists words and alternative words. You also want to do crossword puzzles and play Scrabble (preferably with a computer opponent). Doing word puzzles and playing Scrabble builds your vocabulary, improves mind function in the language areas, and reminds you of words you've completely forgotten or never knew. Medical surveys have also shown that those who make a habit of doing crossword puzzles are less likely to get Alzheimer's, but they are sure why yet except that it stimulates memory.

Having said that, beware. Both crosswords and Scrabble are great time wasters and they will cut into your writing time. :D

Reccomended Reading?

My favorite books include the Twilight series, the Harry Potter series, and the Lord of the Rings.

Anyone who reads books such as those have any reccomendations for other summer reads?

Reccomended Reading?
Have you read Rachel Caine's The Morganville Vampires? College version of Twilight. Try it. Pax-C
Reccomended Reading?

Reply:Have you read Bret Easton Ellis's The Informers? A superior version of a vampire story to Twilight.

Try it.
Reply:OMG I LOVe THE TWILIGHT SERIES TOO!!! THE BEST BOOKS EVER, DON'T U THINK???????
Reply:Oh, okay. For fantasy books try the Blue Bloods series by Melissa de la Cruz. It's a vampire novel that is completly different from Twilight, but still very captivating. Also, anything by Scott Westerfeld (Midnighters, Uglies, Peeps, etc). His books are absolutely addicting!

For non-fantasy, but still really good, try 'Getting the Girl' by Markus Zusak. It is super romantic, without being too gushy-gusy, but still very interesting. I fell in love with it!
Reply:Brian Jacques's series called "Redwall". I also recommend anything by Vladimir Nabokov...particularly "Lolita".
Reply:Ender's Game? seems up your alley 'cause it is science fiction and that is the longest series of books i know of

g'luck
Reply:It depends on what kind of book genre you want. If your looking for tragedy/romance novels:

Nicolas Sparks. Awesome and mature books like: The Notebook (tis a movie), A Walk to Remember (yet another movie), Dear John, True Believe, At First Sight (sequal)

Mystery or Horror:

R.L. Stein. Sort of an easier read, but they're defiantely still creepy. Books like: Truth or Dare, or The Nightmare Room.

There's this one book, that's a bit like Harry Potter. It's called Star Sun: Dawn of the Two. The plot is a little like HP, but also pretty different. Suggested to people who really like Harry Potter.

I'm pretty sure they're coming out with a sequal. I hope I helped you out... I'm sure you'll find some good books!

At the tender age 15, Aya Kitou was diagnosed with a rare disease called Spinocerebellar Degeneration, a disease which eventually affects her nervous system. Through the next few years she slowly loses her ability to walk, speak, and lastly hold a pen before she succumbs into a coma and dies. The cruelest part is the fact that while a part of her brain was deteriorating, she still retains her state of mind--so her body turns into a prison.

The book is a compilation of diary entries she wrote until the day she couldn't hold a pen any longer.

They made a TV drama of her story which brought more recognition to Aya's memoir, but there doesn't seem to be an english translation of it yet. X_X But, some people are in the process of writing a fan-translation so you can check this out in the meantime.

Mark Twain - guitarist and author?

Does anybody know if there are any recordings of the famous Mark Twain playing his guitar?

Mark Twain, guitarist, singer, and literary legend, was first exposed to music by his sister Pamilla. She supplemented the family income by teaching guitar and piano. He obtained his guitar used in 1861 (in 1835 it was $10 new) and kept it in close company until shortly before his death in 1910.

He sang and played for newspaper men of the Nevada Territories, miners from California's Gold Rush days and for passengers aboard Ajax, a clipper ship bound for the Hawaiian Islands. But mostly he played for the willing women of the West. In December 1866, Mark Twain brought his Martin 2 陆-17 guitar aboard the steamer America and sailed from San Francisco to New York City, where he would seek his fortune.
Mark Twain - guitarist and author?
That is very interesting reading. I had no idea Mark Twain did any of that. I thought he just wrote stories. Thanks for the history lesson. You have broadened my horizon for today.
Mark Twain - guitarist and author?
That's a nice cut and paste job you did there.

http://www.npr.org/programs/lnfsound/sto...

It doesn't surprise me that Mark Twain owned a guitar. When he wasn't writing, he was touring the country, giving lectures and making speeches. If any of his music was recorded, it would have been on one of Edison's old phonographs. Even then, a copy of that music would probably be in a museum today. Have you been to the Mark Twain Museum in Hannibal, Missouri? Check it out.

For ladies who have read this book. "catch him and keep him"?

by christian carter.

what do you think of it? issit really good and insightful? or do you get the feeling that the author's saying, if things don't work out, its usually the fault of us girls? (which i think rather unfair cause im sure guys make the mistakes as well)

just read a synopsis of it and am planning to get it. just would like your views on it. thanks!
For ladies who have read this book. "catch him and keep him"?
Yes, read it and it is insightful, but you must read it over and over and over. It wasn't "really" good, no, but it was helpful in certain area's of my own life.
For ladies who have read this book. "catch him and keep him"?
I haven't read it, but what I have found with all these self-help books is that all of them work for some women, and not for others. Some find that using their methods work, and others find that they don't. They all have their supporters and their detractors. If you try this one and it doesn't work for you, there are plenty of others.

I have noticed that most self-help books do put the onus on the woman to make a relationship work (there seem to be very few self-help books addressed to men).

if you read the book and it suggests things that you think you can do quite happily, then by all means try it. However, remember that whatever you do do, you will have to keep on doing it if you are going to 'keep' him, according to the philosophy of the book. So don't do anything that you think you can't live with. it's not worth 'catching' a man if the only way you can do it is by behaving in a way that seems artificial or uncomfortable to you.

Can you tell me a good book about vampires?

I want to read a vampire novel. If it is romantic even better. I already read Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse and I am really bored. I got all summer ahead of me and nothing to read. Synopsis

Spare, chilling language confronts the mysteries of nature and identity in this first book by Wilson. The eponymous keep serves to simultaneously secure and imprison in this book of difficult contradictions.

Publisher's Note

Members of the Nazi super-race discover a mysterious and terrible force that is far more deadly than their own power in an eerie old fortress in Transylvania.

Industry reviews

"Wilson's vocabulary is direct and clear, yet often quietly polysemous. Words like 'tern' and 'gilt' are not puns in her hands; they do not, like jokes, surprise, but unfold before the reader gently, an aurality nearly unspoken. THE KEEP is pure, and that is not to say that it is simple. As a pure mineral can be striated with itself, this book shows the endless intricacy and nuance of the elemental."

Anyone know where to find an interview with Jodi Picoult?

I'm looking for a very specific one - she mentioned in an interview the process she goes through when writing a new book. Something about asking herself "What if?" then letting an idea grow and broaden into a "bigger entity by sitting with her". I need a website with this interview so that I can reference it for an assignment - the website i originally got it from was apparently still in a search engine and the search has expired, so i can't find it again. Please help!!!

Will there be another christopher snow book from dean koontz?

I wish there would be. Christopher Snow was a great character. I was thinking the other day it would be cool to team up Christopher Snow and Odd Thomas for an adventure. Odd could help him out of trouble. Fry Cooks Rule! Pax-C
Will there be another christopher snow book from dean koontz?
That would be great. Anything from Dean Koontz is a must-read for me but the one I have always longed for is a sequel to Watchers. It is my all time favorite by Mr. Koontz %26amp; I would love to know what happened next!

Anyone know Book Title? Adventure novel read for a college where guy on island hides inside temple statue?

The only details I remember are that it took place on an island, I believe someone was stranded there. Somehow he survives, I seem to remember something about wolves. Then he discovers some island people. He watches their rituals. At some point he hides inside of a temple inside of a statue or something to listen to the secret things they say. I can't really think of much besides this - but the fact that I can't think of the title is driving me CRAZY! Thanks for your help!

Its summer, i want to read a lot of books. give me some great books to read!?

Reply:If you are looking for a good book go after Princess Nevermore by Dian Curtis Regan. It is a really good book. I read it when I was a teenager and was hooked. It's about this princess named Quinnella who lives in a underground kingdom and by a magical mistake is sent to our world and has to learn our ways. But will she ever get home? Will she want to get home? It's a really good book and there is also a sequel to the book called Cam's Quest by the same author. I hope you get a chance to read it. :)
Reply:I've always loved anything by Lurlene McDaniel or Judy Blume. They are definitly my favorites!
Reply:I remember when I was 12/13 my favorite book was Wait Till Helen Comes. I don't remember who the author was, but it was a good book. It's a bit spooky though.

Also, you might want to read some of Poe's work. They're mostly poems and short stories, but most are very interesting and very gothic.

I've had a lot of friends that read Anne Rice books too if you want vampires besides the ones in Twilight.

My little sister really likes this one series called The Clique by Lisi Harrison. And she NEVER reads! So it must be good.
Reply:don't worry, i'm not too fond of twilight myself.

i don't hate the books or anything, but i don't think they're as amazing as everyone says they are.
