Book recommendation for a young adult?

My nephew will be graduating from high school and proude of himself (with arrogance) to be an adult. I am looking to give him a book as a gift (among other gifts) to help him grow humble and be respectful to others. Any recommendations?

Its going to take more than a book. I hope he's going to college and living in the dorms. That oughta do it!

I can't think of any books with the message "You're really not that great." I should write that book!

Reply:Do You by Russell Simmons is AWESOME!!!

He'll especially like it if he's into hip hop at all. Russell is an amazing entrepreneur w/ great values and the book is fun to read, colorful words but not vulgar.

Here's a brief description....

Also, look into "The Power Of Now" by Eckhart Tolle.

Hope this helps.

Until then, perhaps the way to his head is cautionary emotions. Maybe two or three used volumes, gleaned at http://www.amazon.com

So, "When Invisible Children Sing," Huang, M.D. A young American's helping with Bolivian street children;

"Hope Rising," Kim Meeder; healing of teens and horses on her Crystal Peaks ranch;

"Testimony of Light," Helen Greaves;

"The Reincarnation of Edgar Cayce?", Free and Wilcock, http://www.divinecosmos.com

"They Call Me Coach," John Wooden; good, straight talk from a great basketball coach;

"University of Destruction," David Wheaton; a top tennis pro, describes what he'd do differently if he were to attend Stanford again. Good, humble values;

"Red Cocaine," Dr. Joseph Douglass. Cautions re drugs;

"Boys Adrift," Dr. Leonard Sax; great book about how young males are now regressing or under stress;

"Expecting Adam," Martha Beck, Ph.D. Great, profound, witty, well-written, very interesting, and with Christian values, about her years at Harvard;

"Freakonomics," S. Levitt; helpful, entertaining introduction to some economics truths.

"Liberal Fascism," Jonah Goldberg; if he's a proud conservative, this would tend to ground him in facts; if he's a proud liberal, it would tend to make him a bit more humble, regarding protest.

And, one for his parents..."The New Strong-Willed Child," Dr. James Dobson.
