Anyone know Book Title? Adventure novel read for a college where guy on island hides inside temple statue?

The only details I remember are that it took place on an island, I believe someone was stranded there. Somehow he survives, I seem to remember something about wolves. Then he discovers some island people. He watches their rituals. At some point he hides inside of a temple inside of a statue or something to listen to the secret things they say. I can't really think of much besides this - but the fact that I can't think of the title is driving me CRAZY! Thanks for your help!
