Why did George Orwell pick the name Winston Smith for the main character in the novel 1984?

You know, I am really not certain of that. I was disappointed with Animal Farm after reading 1984. Oddly enough, that happened to be the year I graduated from high school.
Why did George Orwell pick the name Winston Smith for the main character in the novel 1984?
The reason he picked the name Winston (his first name) is because it gives hope to the character, by relating his first name to Winston Churchill. Winston Churchill , who fought against the will of Hitler, is a man in history who proves hope to the people. His last name Smith , is a common last name used to symbolize how much of an ordinary man Winston is, yet he is so different, within his thoughts and his hate for big brother/the party.
