The Best Way To Kill Off The Protagonist?

The hero of the story I'm working seriously needs to die. Thing is, I'm not sure how.
The Best Way To Kill Off The Protagonist?
it depends on the plot....

just make sure it's a heroic death.
The Best Way To Kill Off The Protagonist?
Remind anyone of "Stranger Than Fiction?" Great movie....

anyway, it really depends on the context you've established. we need more information about the story. In a really good novel, the death of a major character must be pertinent to the story itself.

regardless, I always enjoy the protagonist dying rather unexpectedly (e.g. right after accomplishing some great feat). Make it ironic.
Reply:What type of death do you want your character to have? Heroic? Accidental? A long and painful death?

Here are just some random ideas off the top of my head:

gets run over by car, train, snow plow, etc.

fights a dragon but gets thrown off a mountain

falls into a pit of lava

falls into a pit full of angry sharks, crocodiles, wolves, hockey fans

gets thrown off a ship during a violent storm

gets shipwrecked on a deserted island

burns to death at the steak

gets seriously ill and dies

got kill while defending family and/or friends (the only heroic one on the list, lol)
Reply:Hmm, it really depends on what kind of story it is. Like if it's a romance, you could have the protagonist die after losing his/her love, and drowning him/herself out of despair or something, you know?

I think it's most interesting when a character is killed off unexpectedly, or in an action-filled scene. You could have the protagonist in a battle/fight to the death with the antagonist. Or, something that would be pretty depressing but might work is having the protagonist lose his/her memory (you'll have to figure that out) and just walk into the wilderness, and never return. And you can say that the protagonist went to search for an answer to life, but never found it.

I dunno. Just ideas. :)
