I am looking for a scifi book about this guy who uses a special suit made just for him. I don't know the name

the story is about this guy who every time he picks up a laser pistol his eyes get all blurry until he finds this suit and pistol combo that enhances his vision. I think he is also looking for his dad. The cover of the book has him in the suit and he (i think) is pointing the pistol at something and there is a girl at his feet. The back has these transparent looking dinosuars with glowing eyes. I really liked the story and would love to add it to my library. I first read it when i was on the uss midway cv-41 some 20+ yrs ago
